Subhabrata Sengupta, Partner at Avalon Consulting, shared his perspectives on the evolving fuel landscape in India and the economics of Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFVs), in an article published by NDTV.

In the article, he explores the growing conversation around petrol, ethanol and flex-fuel vehicles, highlighting the financial and technological considerations that consumers should evaluate before making a vehicle purchase. While Flex Fuel Vehicles are designed to operate on varying blends of petrol and ethanol, they require specialized hardware, including ethanol sensors, modified fuel injection systems and corrosion-resistant components, resulting in a higher upfront acquisition cost.

Using the example of the flex-fuel version of the WagonR, the article explains that these vehicles can cost approximately ₹86,000 more than their conventional petrol counterparts. However, the long-term economics depend on factors such as fuel prices, usage patterns and ownership duration, making total cost of ownership a more meaningful metric than the initial purchase price alone.

The article underscores the importance of balancing sustainability goals with consumer affordability and informed decision-making as India accelerates its transition towards alternative fuels. It provides practical insights into how fuel choices can significantly influence long-term ownership costs while supporting the country’s broader clean mobility and energy diversification objectives.
