Santosh Sreedhar, Partner at Avalon Consulting, shared his views on FSSAI’s new regulations on displaying nutritional value of food items sold on digital platforms by food aggregators and all food outlets, from July 1, 2022. According to him, absence of declaration of weight or size of the portion, which is an important parameter for judging the calorie intake quantity, is a critical gap of the regulation. Weight measurement and declaration on packages can be easily monitored by FSSAI, as per his opinion. He also opined that implementation of the regulation can be challenging due to the highly unorganised structure of the sector, wide variety of food products, non-standard weights of food items sold and high margin of tolerance for calorific value declaration. These difficulties will only lead to enacting a regulation but not achieve its objectives.
